What is a smart switchgear?

A smart switchgear is a kind of electrical equipment that integrates advanced sensor technology, communication technology, automatic control technology, and intelligent analysis technology, etc., to carry out intelligent upgrades on traditional switchgears. It is mainly used for the distribution, control, and protection of electrical energy in the power system. The following is a detailed introduction from aspects such as its functional characteristics, structural composition, and application advantages:

Functional Characteristics

Real-time Monitoring Function: It can monitor various electrical parameters inside the switchgear in real-time, such as voltage, current, temperature, humidity, partial discharge, etc. Through the sensors installed inside the switchgear, these data are accurately collected and uploaded to the monitoring system, enabling operation and maintenance personnel to keep abreast of the operating status of the equipment in real-time.

Fault Diagnosis and Early Warning: Based on the collected data, intelligent algorithms are used for analysis, which can promptly detect potential fault hazards and issue early warnings. For example, when the system detects that the temperature of a certain part is abnormally high or the partial discharge amount increases, it will automatically send out an alarm signal to prompt the operation and maintenance personnel to conduct inspections and handling in a timely manner, avoiding the further expansion of faults.

Automatic Control Function: It can automatically complete the opening and closing operations of the switch according to preset rules and commands, achieving the automatic control of the power system. For instance, when the system detects faults such as overloads and short circuits in the power grid, it can automatically and quickly cut off the circuit to protect the safety of equipment and lines. In some scenarios where distributed energy sources are connected, it can also automatically adjust the switch status according to the power generation situation of the energy sources and the demand of the power grid, realizing the reasonable distribution and connection of energy.

Communication Function: It has a powerful communication capability and supports a variety of communication protocols, such as IEC61850, Modbus, etc. It can communicate seamlessly with the substation monitoring system, dispatching center, etc., realizing data sharing and remote control. Operation and maintenance personnel can remotely operate and monitor the switchgear through the network in the monitoring center far away from the site, improving the convenience and efficiency of operation and maintenance.

Structural Composition

Primary Equipment: It includes circuit breakers, disconnectors, earthing switches, busbars, current transformers, voltage transformers, etc. These devices are responsible for completing the basic functions of electrical energy distribution, transmission, and control, and are the core part of the switchgear. Compared with traditional switchgears, the primary equipment in smart switchgears usually adopts more advanced manufacturing processes and materials, with higher reliability and performance indicators.

Secondary Equipment: It mainly includes intelligent measurement and control units, protection devices, communication modules, sensors, etc. The intelligent measurement and control unit is responsible for collecting and processing various electrical parameters, realizing the monitoring and control of primary equipment; the protection device is used for quickly detecting and protecting power system faults; the communication module realizes the communication connection between the switchgear and external systems; the sensors are responsible for sensing various physical quantities inside the switchgear, providing data support for intelligent monitoring and control.

Application Advantages
