Requirements for enclosure partitioning in GIS design according to IEC standard

Field: Power switch
China

The partitioning of a Gas - Insulated Switchgear (GIS) is significantly influenced by the service continuity requirements during maintenance, repair, and extension activities. Additionally, local health and safety regulations must be taken into account.

GIS should be divided into compartments in a way that:

  • During various operations that necessitate the de - energization of certain parts of the GIS, such as maintenance, repair, and extension, the compartments taken out of service adhere to the user's service continuity requirements.

  • The impact of an internal arc within a compartment is restricted to that specific compartment only.

  • In the event of a major failure, the duration of unavailability aligns with the user's service continuity requirements.

  • Considering the available gas handling equipment, the gas compartment can be evacuated and refilled within a reasonable time frame.

Each compartment must be equipped with:

  • A filling valve.

  • A gas monitoring device.

Based on the GIS design, each compartment may also be equipped with the following accessories:

  • A pressure relief device.

  • A desiccant.

  • An internal fault arc location detector.

The figure provides an example of a partitioning design for different types of adjacent compartments.

What are the causes of failures in low-voltage switchgear circuit breakers themselves?
Based on years of field statistics on switchgear accidents, combined with analysis focusing on the circuit breaker itself, the main causes have been identified as: failure of operation mechanism; insulation faults; poor breaking and closing performance; and poor conductivity.1.Failure of Operation MechanismFailure of operation mechanism manifests as delayed operation or unintended operation. Since the most basic and important function of a high-voltage circuit breaker is to operate correctly and

Compact Air-Insulated RMUs for Retrofit & New Substations
Air-insulated ring main units (RMUs) are defined in contrast to compact gas-insulated RMUs. Early air-insulated RMUs used vacuum or puffer-type load switches from VEI, as well as gas-generating load switches. Later, with the widespread adoption of the SM6 series, it became the mainstream solution for air-insulated RMUs. Similar to other air-insulated RMUs, the key difference lies in replacing the load switch with an SF6-encapsulated type—where the three-position switch for load and grounding is
