What is the Charging Pile Interface?

Charging pile definition

Charging pile interface is an important part of connecting electric vehicles and charging piles, and its standardization is crucial for the popularization and development of electric vehicles.

The charging pile interface is generally composed of the following parts:

Plug and Socket

Plug: Installed on elecketctric vehicles to connect charging piles.

Socket: A plug installed on the charging post to receive the electric vehicle.

Electrical connection part

Contacts: Used to transmit electrical energy and signals.

Isulation: Used to isolate different contacts to prevent electrical short circuit.

Mechanical connection

Locking mechanism: Used to ensure the stability and security of plugs and sockets in the connected state.

Protective shell: Used to protect the interface from external environment, such as dust, moisture, collision and so on.

Communication part

Communication interface: used to realize the communication between electric vehicles and charging piles, and transmit charging parameters, status information, etc.

Communication protocol: specifies the communication mode, data format, command set, etc. of the communication interface.

Type 1/Type 2 (IEC 62196)

Type 1: Mainly used for AC charging in North America, with a five-pin plug.

Type 2: Widely used in Europe for AC charging, with a seven-pin plug.

CCS (Combined Charging System)

CCS Type 1: Combines Type 1 AC charging interface and DC fast charging interface, mainly used in North America.

CCS Type 2: Combines Type 2 AC charging interface and DC fast charging interface, mainly used in Europe.

The CCS interface supports AC and DC charging at the same time to achieve higher charging power.

CHAdeMO (CHArge de MOve)

Mainly used in Japan and parts of Asia, it supports DC fast charging.

The CHAdeMO interface has nine pins and can achieve up to 62.5 kW of DC charging power.

GB/T (China National Standard)

China's national standard for domestic production of electric vehicles and charging piles.

The GB/T standard is divided into AC charging and DC charging, where the DC charging standard supports charging power up to 120 kW.

Tesla Connector

A dedicated charging port used by Tesla vehicles, originally designed for Tesla models.

As Tesla opens up its supercharging network around the world, Tesla connectors are also starting to be adopted by other brands of electric vehicles.

Matters needing attention

Compatibility: Ensure that the charging pile interface matches the charging interface of the electric vehicle.

Safety: Use charging piles and charging cables that meet safety standards.

Charging speed: Select the charging power that matches the battery capacity of the electric vehicle.

Maintenance: Check the status of charging pile interface regularly to ensure reliable connection.

Selection suggestion

Ac charging: For daily charging needs, you can choose a charging pile that supports Type 1 or Type 2 interfaces.

Dc fast charging: For long distance driving or emergency charging needs, you can choose a charging pile that supports CCS or CHAdeMO interface.

The development trend of charging pile interface

  • Standardization and compatibility

  • Intelligent and interconnected

  • High power and fast charging

Sum up

Charging pile interface is an important part of electric vehicle charging system, and its standardization, intelligence and high-power will bring broader prospects for the popularization and development of electric vehicles.

Design of a Four-Port Solid-State Transformer: Efficient Integration Solution for Microgrids
The use of power electronics in industry is increasing, ranging from small-scale applications such as chargers for batteries and LED drivers, to large-scale applications like photovoltaic (PV) systems and electric vehicles. Typically, a power system consists of three parts: power plants, transmission systems, and distribution systems. Traditionally, low-frequency transformers are used for two purposes: electrical isolation and voltage matching. However, 50-/60-Hz transformers are bulky and heavy
