Types of AC Motor Windings

The classification of AC motor windings can be carried out from multiple perspectives, mainly including the number of phases, the number of layers inside the slot, the number of slots occupied by each pole per phase, winding arrangement, phase belt, coil shape, and end connection method. The following is a detailed introduction to the classification:

Classification by the number of phases

  • Single-phase winding: Suitable for specific applications such as small motors in household appliances.

  • Three-phase winding: The most common type, widely used in various motors for industrial and household applications.

Classified by the number of layers in the slot

  • Single Layer Winding: Only one coil side in each slot.

  • Double layer winding: Two coil sides are placed in each slot, usually divided into upper and lower layers.

Classified by the number of slots occupied by each pole per phase

  • Integral-slot winding: The number of slots occupied per pole and phase is an integer.

  • Fractional-pitch winding: The number of slots occupied per pole and phase is a non-integer.

Classified by winding arrangement

  • Concentrated winding: The winding is concentrated in a few slots.

  • Distributed winding: The winding is distributed across multiple slots to reduce the effects of harmonics.

Classify by tape

  • 120° phase belt winding

  • 60º phase belt winding

  • 30º Phase Belt Winding

Classification by coil shape and end connection method Wound Coil

  • Wound Coil

  • Hollow-core winding

  • Chain winding

  • Interlaced winding

Classification by Magnetic Potential Waveform Generated by Winding

  • Sine Wave Winding

  • Trapezoidal Winding

The above are the main types of stator windings for AC motors. Different winding types are suitable for different application scenarios and requirements. Choosing the appropriate winding type is crucial for the performance and efficiency of the motor.

Design of a Four-Port Solid-State Transformer: Efficient Integration Solution for Microgrids
The use of power electronics in industry is increasing, ranging from small-scale applications such as chargers for batteries and LED drivers, to large-scale applications like photovoltaic (PV) systems and electric vehicles. Typically, a power system consists of three parts: power plants, transmission systems, and distribution systems. Traditionally, low-frequency transformers are used for two purposes: electrical isolation and voltage matching. However, 50-/60-Hz transformers are bulky and heavy
