How does the oil-immersed transformer work as a fire protection device?

Protection Devices:
Gas Relay:

When a fault occurs inside the transformer, such as local overheating, electric arc discharge, etc., the insulating oil will decompose and produce gas. The gas relay is installed in the connecting pipeline between the oil tank and the conservator of the oil - immersed transformer.
Once a certain amount of gas is detected, the gas relay will act. It can take different measures according to the severity of the fault. For example, when the light - gas action occurs, an alarm signal will be sent to remind the operation personnel to check; when the heavy - gas action occurs, the power supply of the transformer will be directly cut off to prevent the fault from further expanding and causing a fire.

Fire Isolation Measures:
In the installation environment of the transformer, fire isolation facilities are usually set up. For example, in a substation, an oil - immersed transformer may be installed in an independent fire - proof compartment.
The fire - proof compartment is constructed with fire - resistant materials, such as fire - bricks, fire - proof coatings, etc. These materials can prevent the spread of fire for a certain period of time (such as 1 - 2 hours, depending on the material properties), buying time for firefighters to come and put out the fire.
In addition, fire - proof dikes may be set up around the transformer to prevent the large - area fire caused by the outflow of insulating oil after the rupture of the transformer's oil tank. The fire - proof dikes can limit the leaked oil within a certain range

Why Do Substations Use Stones, Gravel, Pebbles, and Crushed Rock?In substations, equipment such as power and distribution transformers, transmission lines, voltage transformers, current transformers, and disconnect switches all require grounding. Beyond grounding, we will now explore in depth why gravel and crushed stone are commonly used in substations. Though they appear ordinary, these stones play a critical safety and functional role.In substation grounding design—especially when multiple gr

Why Does the Transformer Core Need to Be Grounded?During operation, the transformer core, along with the metal structures, parts, and components that fix the core and windings, are all situated in a strong electric field. Under the influence of this electric field, they acquire a relatively high potential with respect to ground. If the core is not grounded, a potential difference will exist between the core and the grounded clamping structures and tank, which may lead to intermittent discharge.I
