Steep wavefront, with a rise time typically ranging from 2 to 20 nanoseconds: When restriking occurs in the contact clearance of a disconnector, the arc - reignition process is extremely rapid. As a result, the voltage waveform injected into the power grid exhibits a very high ascending or descending steepness.

Theoretically, the amplitude of Very Fast Transient Overvoltage (VFTO) can reach up to 3.0 per - unit. This extreme situation occurs when the polarities of the voltages on both sides of the open - circuit branch are opposite and both are at their maximum values. Taking into account practical factors such as residual voltage, damping, and attenuation, the VFTO obtained in actual measurements or simulation tests generally does not exceed 2.0 per - unit in most cases. Considering the worst - case scenario, the maximum overvoltage can reach approximately 2.5 to 2.8 per - unit.

VFTO contains numerous high - frequency components within the range of 30 kHz to 100 MHz. This is because Gas - Insulated Switchgear (GIS) uses sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) gas as the medium, and its insulation strength is much higher than that of air.VFTO is closely associated with the restriking and arc - quenching instants of the GIS disconnector, as well as the position of the disconnector nodes within the GIS equipment. The figure shows an example of a VFTO waveform in a 750 - kV GIS.

What is Voltage Stability in Power Systems?
What is Voltage Stability in Power Systems?
Definition of Voltage StabilityVoltage stability in a power system is defined as the ability to maintain acceptable voltages at all buses under both normal operating conditions and after being subjected to a disturbance. In normal operation, the system’s voltages remain stable; however, when a fault or disturbance occurs, voltage instability may arise, leading to a progressive and uncontrollable voltage decline. Voltage stability is sometimes referred to as "load stability."Voltage instability c

What is Dual Trace Oscilloscope?
What is Dual Trace Oscilloscope?DefinitionA dual-trace oscilloscope uses a single electron beam to generate two separate traces, each deflected by an independent input source. To produce these two traces, it primarily employs two operating modes—alternate mode and chopped mode—controlled by a switch.Purpose of a Dual-Trace OscilloscopeWhen analyzing or studying multiple electronic circuits, comparing their voltage characteristics is often critical. While one could use multiple oscilloscopes for

What is Cathode Ray Oscilloscope (CRO)?DefinitionA cathode ray oscilloscope (CRO) is an electrical instrument for measuring, analyzing and visualizing waveforms and other electronic/electrical phenomena. As a high - speed X - Y plotter, it shows an input signal against another signal or time. Capable of analyzing waveforms, transient phenomena and time - varying quantities across a wide frequency range (from very low to radio frequencies), it mainly operates on voltage. What are the applications of GIS voltage transformers in digital substations?
Hey everyone, I’m Echo, and I’ve been working with voltage transformers (VTs) for 12 years. From learning how to wire and do error tests under my mentor’s watchful eye, to now participating in all kinds of smart substation projects — I’ve seen the power industry evolve from traditional systems to fully digital ones. Especially in recent years, more and more 220 kV GIS systems are adopting electronic voltage transformers (EVTs), slowly replacing the old-school electro
